Skipper qualifications differ among our yacht programs, with larger yachts and heavier weather generally requiring higher levels of skill and experience.
The ideal starting place for persons new to sailing is our SailClub 27. If you just want to get in on the fun of sailing, or perhaps find out whether sailing is for you, then you can join as a Sail Club 27 Crew. We give you the training you need to be an effective crew member onTuesday evening or Saturday morning sails.
If you have taken Basic Keelboat Sailing 101 with us or elsewhere, or have the equivalent in small boat sailing experience, you should be ready after familiarization and orientation to be a SailClub 27 Skipper. You can take our Catalina 27, Whirlaway, out on your own or skipper her on Tuesday or Saturday club sails.
To bring your boat over to the touch and go dock to pick up and drop off guests, to sail in winds above 15 knots, to bring your boat back after dusk, or to anchor at the Oak Street/Oive Park anchorage, or to captain one of our larger boats, you’ll need additional skills equivalent to our Beyond the Basics 102.
When you’re ready to sail in heavier weather, sail at night, cruise to nearby harbors or take the boat across the lake, we have the training opportunities to prepare you. Advanced Sailing 103 and Cruising 104 combine personal training and the fun of club sailing under the watchful eyes of our professional captains to give you the confidence to begin cruising adventures on your own
